UNTIMELY DEATH: Average of 269 persons die on Abuja roads annually in nine years, but mortality rate reduces in 2023

THE Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has recorded that 2,421 people died on Abuja roads between 2015 and June 2023, which is an average of 269 road deaths per annum in nine years.

The number of deaths on Abuja roads represents members of nearly 25 football teams.

Over the past nine years, the FCT has been continually ranked among the states with the highest number of road traffic crashes (RTCs), fatalities, and injuries.

This is based on the data obtained from the Federal Road Safety Corps quarterly publication, annual reports, and the National Bureau of Statistics quarterly report.

The Federal Capital Territory had the highest fatality rate from traffic accidents in 2015, with 318 fatalities resulting from car crashes.

In 2016 and 2017, there were 253 and 287 road crash deaths, respectively.

The number of people killed in road accidents involving vehicles decreased to 281 in 2018, then to 262 in 2019 and 236 in 2020. The number decreased further to 216 in 2021.

But a year later, the number surged. In 2022, 403 lives were lost as a result of crashes from automobiles, trucks, motorbikes, and heavy machinery.

In addition, 165 individuals lost their lives in highway crashes between January and June of 2023.

In addition, over the previous nine years, 21,192 people suffered a range of mild, fatal, and catastrophic injuries.

Another breakdown reveals that 261 and 2,700 people were injured in road accidents in 2015 and 2016, while 2,360 people were wounded in 2017.

Similarly, in 2018 and 2019, 2,347 and 2513 individuals, respectively, suffered injuries from road collisions while driving.

Considering the fact that 2,007 and 2,184 people, respectively, were hurt in vehicle collisions on FCT roads in 2020 and 2021, the number of people hurt in accidents on Abuja roads increased tremendously to 3,070 in 2022 and 1,320 in total between January and June 2023.

Analysis indicated that 2,360 individuals survived accidents with varied degrees of damage annually, and 196 people are injured on Abuja roads every month.

Further investigation of the documents showed that 10,742 traffic accidents occurred within the review period.

According to the data, there were 1,293, 1,373, and 1,106 instances of traffic crashes in 2015, 2016, and 2017 in turn.

The number of traffic collision cases dropped sharply to 1,051 in 2018 but then spiked to 1,181 in 2019 and 1116 in 2020.

It then rose to 1117 collision cases in 2021 and 1803 collision cases in 2022, but then fell to 702 instances in the first half of 2023.

Thus, there have been an average of 1,193 collisions within Abuja roads annually and 99 crashes monthly.

In addition, 23,613 individuals fell victim to road accidents involving automobiles and heavy trucks.

According to the data, a total of 8,284 individuals were killed or seriously injured in traffic accidents on Abuja roads between 2015 and 2018.
