Maxwell Opara, an Abuja-based human rights lawyer has condemned the intervention of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the Niger Republic over the military coup.Â
Opara who was speaking on Arise TV morning Show said Tinubu does not have the moral authority to condemn a coup while his government in Nigeria violates the democratic principle of the rule of law.
The lawyer referenced the case of the former CBN governor Godwin Emefiele who was arrested in June by DSS and was granted bail by the High Court in Lagos, but the secret police re-arrested him.
The DSS accused Emefiele of fraud, money laundering, round-tripping, and undue financial benefits among other crimes.
Several rights groups have called on the president to call the DSS to order being the Commander in Chief, but the call has been ignored.
Human rights lawyers have also sued DSS Director-General Yusuf Magaji Bichi for contempt.
Opara also cited the case of Nnamdi Kanu who has been freed by the court but still remains in the DSS custody despite the court ruling.
He concluded that Tinubu administration is hypocritical for blaming coupists while he is violating democratic norms in Nigeria.
